About the show Punong sa Ilawod
Punong sa Ilawod features art subjects, styles, and mediums with the purpose of raising funds for VIVA ExCon, a gathering every two years of artists, art patrons, and community leaders from the Visayas and other places.
Buying art through the show is supporting the event, and it allows the continuity of VIVA ExCon as the “noble tradition of Visayas artists, art patrons, and institutions (from the region and beyond).”

The word Ilawod means “downstream river” in Hiligaynon or is sometimes used to describe the water flowing from the mountains through the river and moving towards the sea.
Punong, on the other hand, is also a Hiligaynon word used to describe a water catchment or pond, and it is applied here as a downstream catchment zone to illustrate the region as the catchment or home of “some of the leading Ilonggo artists and those who have chosen to make the region their home.”
In this show, Punong sa Ilawod carries the meaning of a goodwill gesture because “like water, generosity is blind to boundaries. And as water flows, goodwill can be channeled, collected, and offered where it is most needed.”
It also helps express that the event aspires to attain unity by saying that it is “striving for unity, even as it seeks a shared statement of the highest artistry.”
It is the esthetic sibling of Gibwangan: A Collateral Show by Antiqueño Artists for VIVA ExCon Antique, concurrently running at SM City Iloilo up to October 1, 2023.

The VIVA ExCon 2023 fundraiser Punong sa Ilawod is jointly organized by Museo Iloilo, the VIVA ExCon Antique 2023 team, and Green Papaya Art Projects.
Suba sa Iraya is the VIVA ExCon 2023 theme
The VIVA ExCon 2023 in Antiques speaks of rivers and streams because the theme for this edition is Suba sa Iraya, meaning “going against a strong current of a river or a counterflow” in Karay-a language.
The Suba sa Iraya may also be understood in English as a crosscurrent, and the event is considered a trajectory that needs further unpacking, for it is envisioned as an opportunity to look at their existing art practices and find resonance with those that are not familiar and popular streams of influence on the island.
The province of Antique has nine major rivers and endowed with more or less 70 river systems or tributaries that serve as channels for naturally flowing freshwater from the mountains, passing some 14 waterfalls before exciting the sea. This is the reason why the province adopted the tourism campaign slogan: “Where the Mountains Meet the Sea.”
VIVA ExCon 2023 Antique is supported by the Office of Senator Loren Legarda, Office of Congressman Antonio Legarda, Antique Provincial Government, Local Government of San Jose de Buenavista, Antique LGUs, University of Antique, Mercedes Zobel, National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Goethe Institut-Philippines, Japan Foundation-Manila, and Outlook Pointe Foundation.
