Thrive Art Gallery opens with the show From the Backroom
In “Poetics of Space,” Gaston Bachelard speaks of how imagination fills that space with spirit and meaning, and reciprocally, how the space evokes feeling, memory, and fantasy in its occupants’ imaginations.
On the other hand, in a broader social context, Henri Lefebvre theorizes that the production of space itself is an act of creation. These ideas resonate within the backroom, where the artist does not only create an artwork but the very environment itself, shared Canja.

In this hybrid exhibition, we re-examine the presentation of the artworks to their audience, bringing a glimpse of the artistic process through photographs of work spaces, notes, and objects that influenced and inspired the artist, explained Canja, unfolding within the gallery, which by itself is a testament to artistic transformation, having been converted from a clothing store to an art space.
“From the Backroom” attempts to create a meeting point where the artist and audience engage in a silent dialogue. The very act of entering the backroom can be taken as a way of witnessing the raw and unfiltered process, which in a way makes viewing art a participatory act.
The exhibition is an invitation from the Thrive Art Gallery for the audience to step into the backrooms of several Ilonggo artists with diverse backgrounds, each with a different way of interacting with their creative space.
