Marrz Capanang to unveil 5th solo exhibition, Bioluminescence
Ilonggo intuitive artist Marrz Capanang is preparing to unveil his 5th solo exhibition, Bioluminescence: Kaathag kag Kapawa, at Galerie Anna on March 27, 2025.
The exhibition explores how elements of light in darkness have deeply influenced Capanang’s life and art, reflecting the significant symbols, events, people, and objects that have shaped his journey.
“Bioluminescence in my life represents the symbols, events, and people that have contributed to my wholeness,” Capanang explained. “As I go deeper and darker, they glow even brighter. Even when my eyes are closed, they continue to illuminate my path.”
Capanang’s exhibition titles often spark intellectual curiosity, blending English and Hiligaynon words or combining familiar terms with scientific concepts. His work reflects a strong connection to cultural symbols, advocating for the environment and honoring the rich traditions of Panay. Through his art, Capanang invites viewers to share meaning and explore connections.
The title Bioluminescence: Kaathag kag Kapawa exemplifies this blending of languages. The Hiligaynon word “kaathag” translates to “clarity.” It is also used to describe “naathagan,” or enlightened, both symbolizing a state of being clear or clarified. “Kapawa,” on the other hand, means “light” and is often used in both cultural and religious contexts to signify hope or illumination.

Moreover, the scientific term, bioluminescence, refers to the natural production and emission of light by living organisms, such as fireflies, certain fungi, and deep-sea creatures like jellyfish. This “glow in the dark” is produced through a chemical reaction involving luciferin and luciferase, molecules that enable these organisms to shine in the darkness.
The glow that emerges from the dark serves a purpose for bioluminescent organisms for it either attract mates, deter predators, or lure a prey.
Understandably, bioluminescence serves as a metaphor for Capanang, depicting those moments when light shines through darkness. In essence, the glow of bioluminescence, though soft and flickering, represents clarity and hope during moments of uncertainty, a reminder that even in darkness, there is light, much like the saying, “there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
Bioluminescence: Kaathag kag Kapawa will open with a reception on March 27, 2025, at 5:00 P.M. at Galerie Anna, UGF, Festival Supermall Expansion Wing, Filinvest City, Alabang, Muntinlupa, 1781 Metro Manila.
