Marrz Capanang brings deeper narrative in “Mga Kalibutan/Realms”
Marrz Capanang to present a deeper narrative for his 6th Solo Show, “Mga Kalibutan / Realms”—opening on July 19, 2025, at the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA).
A Visayan or Hiligaynon word, “kalibutan” means “world,” “universe,” or even “realm of existence.” Followers of Capanang’s art and life are excited to see his latest collection—coming just four months after he presented a breathtaking body of work in his 5th solo show.

The title alone carries Capanang’s fixation on consistency in meaning-making, linking language to canvas, and text to artwork. It offers spiritual, metaphysical, and poetic connotations while reflecting the mystical sensibility and liminal character often present in his practice.
The collection will explore elements of mysticism, cosmology, and the artist’s lived experiences as an animist. As expected, it will reveal dimensions of the multiple roles Capanang plays in society, within his art collective, and in his personal life—as a sensitive and deeply affectionate human being.
The collection in Mga Kalibutan / Realms likely evokes multiple realities, perspectives, or existential spaces—both literal and symbolic—artistically building on Capanang’s previous solo shows while deepening the subject matter.
A quick look back: Marrz Capanang’s first solo show was Pangut-angut (Connectivity or Linkage) at Kulay Diwa Contemporary Art Gallery in Parañaque in 2016. His second solo show was Pasisiring (en.trance) at the now-defunct Gallery i in 2018.
This was followed by his third solo show, Panakayon sang mga Tinubo (Meandering Natives), at the defunct Mamusa Art Gallery later in 2018. Four years later, in 2022, he mounted his fourth solo show, Tahud (Reverence), at Art Underground in San Juan, Metro Manila.
On March 27, 2025, he presented Bioluminescence: Kaathag kag Kapawa at Galerie Anna in Alabang, Muntinlupa—a collection of works he considered deeply personal.
For his latest exhibition, Mga Kalibutan / Realms, Marrz Capanang continues his practice of titling exhibitions and works in ways that spark intellectual curiosity—often blending English and Hiligaynon or intertwining cultural terms with scientific language. The phrase evokes multiple layers of existence, inviting viewers to traverse physical, spiritual, and ecological dimensions.
