The Salvador Dali Zodiac Series is considered a limited edition print that shows the artist’s whimsical interpretations of the 12 zodiac characters in relation to astrology, a study of the alignment of the sun, moon, and planets.

 

The movement of these celestial bodies is believed to have an influence on the conditions of the environment, similar to the gravitational pull that causes high tide and low tide and that affects the personality, mood, and attitude of people. This was popularized by the horoscope, a prediction of the future and prophecies of the next events of one’s life, especially pertaining to love, romantic relationships, health, and wealth. 

 

The interpretations are based on the circular arrangement, movement, and positions of the 12 astrological signs and are organized into two major elements: four triplicities and three quadruplicities.

The triplicities are: Fire Signs – Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius; Earth Signs – Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn; Air Signs – Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius; and Water Signs – Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. The triplicate signs expound on personalities. Fire signs, for instance, are known to be exuberant and passionate people, while earth signs are grounded and practical. Distinctively, air signs are described as curious and intellectual, while water signs are emotional and intuitive.

Quadruplicities, on the other hand, expound on traits like Cardinal for Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn, and they are expected to be excellent at starting off with initiatives and being action-oriented. Fixed are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius, and they are known to be steady and consistent. Mutable or prone to change, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, or Pisces possess fluidity and are quickly adaptive to change and transformation.

These characterizations through the zodiac signs inspired the Spanish surrealist artist to come up with his own interpretations. The Zodiac Series is composed of 275 prints. The ILOMOCA collection is 211 of 275 in 35.5 x 25 cm (work) and 63 x 50 cm (frame).
