Puluy-an Art Gallery: Crossover by Yko Umadhay, Sanib group show
The Puluy-an Art Gallery will feature the works of Yko Umadhay of Sta. Barbara, Iloilo, in a solo exhibition titled Crossover, side-by-side with a group show, Sanib. The two shows carry a shared theme around interconnectedness and interrelationships.
The exhibition will present Pop Surrealism paintings that explore the intersection of popular culture across different regions. It touches on subjects like the Babaylan (Shaman) and how precolonial practices intersect with modern faith and manifest in different places.
The collection by Umadhay underscores the impact of contemporary pop culture while reflecting on the fluidity and dynamism of cultural identities in today’s digital era.
In this show, crossover may be defined as “crossing from one side to the other” and reveal intersectionalities or interconnectedness in the process. The solo exhibit segues to the group show Sanib, which also shares elements of interrelations having a meaning of “joining together,” or as demonstrated in popular terms as “sanib pwersa”—joining forces.
Sanib cultivates connection and collective creativity. Showcasing a diverse array of mediums and artistic styles, the exhibition celebrates the unique voices and perspectives of each artist involved, underscoring the beauty and power inherent in unity. By seamlessly integrating paintings, sculptures, and installations, the exhibition creates a cohesive experience that resonates with harmony and collective expression.
Sanib and Crossover will open July 7, 2024 (Sunday), 3:00 PM onwards at Pulu-an Art Gallery, Quarto Uno, Brgy. Bita Sur, Oton Iloilo.
