Baysulangpu will exhibit new works in “Dagta-an”
The group Baysulangpu will introduce new works in “Dagta-an: Forming New Perspectives” at the Thrive Art Gallery in The Shops at Atria, Mandurriao, Iloilo City.
The show is a walk back on the history of the art group since its establishment in 2001 through the combined works of its venerable and young new members.
The group’s captivating name “Baysulangpu” is an anagram of the Hiligaynon word “Pulang Subay” or red ant, a play on words through rearrangement of letters commonly referred as neologism or slang.
The members adopted the name for ants, especially weaver ant or fire ant, which embodies the ethos of hard work, resourcefulness, cooperation, and unity – a guiding principle of the group.
The exhibit title “dagta-an” is described in Hiligaynon as a form of staining or blotting, denotes shared understanding and connection between revered and new generation of members, aspiring that their skills and fresh perspectives will enrich Baysulangpu and bring the group forward.
The city’s evolving socioeconomic landscape posed challenges for the group as its membership swiftly changed from architecture students to their friends, and later to millennial and Gen Z members.
“Dagta-an” signifies this evolution, marking a pivotal moment of passing the torch to drive the art group forward. In a world that changes rapidly and where the art scene continually reinvents itself, an indicative gesture that aims to propel the group into the future.
Among members who will exhibit their works are Arnold Almacen, Dea Mikaela Bañas, Edmar Colmo, Edwin De los Reyes, Johanz Mercurio, June Moreno, Kimpoy Dela Cruz, Onofre Ballescas, Vivien Gardose, and Yanni Ysabel.
“Dagta-an” will open on August 10, 2024 at 6:00 PM.
