Adoro Gallery to show Hidlaw, the Iggy Rodriguez collection
Adoro Gallery-Museum will feature the works of Iggy Rodriguez in “Hidlaw”. It will open October 13 and will run until November 30, 2024.
The artist announced his Iloilo exhibition on his Facebook (September 25) with an invitation to friends, saying, “para sa mga kaibigan sa area, kitakits” or see you my friends in Iloilo area.
The title of the show, “Hidlaw,” is a Hiligaynon word which means “longing,” often expressed by Ilonggos as “nahidlaw ako” or “makahilidlaw” – I long for you or over something; a yearning or craving. Also spoken to mean I miss the person, the place, or a thing.
For this show, Hidlaw unifies the works as an overall theme. According to Rodriguez, Hidlaw conveys a profound sense of yearning that aligns closely with the artist’s intent, capturing the depth and complexity of desire in a way that resonates with the emotional undercurrent of his works.
In addition, Hidlaw also reflects a careful consideration of the regional language’s ability to encapsulate and communicate the intricate feelings explored in the exhibition. He invites viewers to reflect on the intricate interplay of struggle and identity, promising an evocative experience that echoes his commitment to social engagement through art.
Raoul Ignacio “Iggy” M. Rodriguez (b. 1974) is a distinguished Filipino artist whose work profoundly engages with the tradition of Social Realism and politically-engaged art. His artistic journey began in the mid-1990s as a member of UGAT Lahi, a collective of progressive artists dedicated to creating impactful works for public protests in Manila.
Over the years, Rodriguez has developed a unique visual language that centers on the body as a potent symbol of alienation and struggle. His exploration of oppression and sufferance manifests in intricate drawings, paintings, and installations, where he delves into the complex relationships between humanity and its environment. Utilizing travesty and satire, Rodriguez subverts dominant narratives, challenging the structures that contribute to social dislocation.
