Matter and Motion: The 3rd solo of John Paul Castillo
John Paul Castillo, a 2010 recipient of the Philippine Arts Award for his work “State of Complexity,” will open his much-awaited 3rd solo exhibition at the Puluy-an Art Gallery in Oton, Iloilo.
John Paul Castillo will present works that delve into the relationship between tangible reality and humanity’s pursuit of the unknown and explore how the environment shapes human yearnings and vulnerabilities.
The collection in “Matter and Motion” deliberates on the dual role of surroundings in nurturing and challenging individuals, illustrating how these forces collectively define their journey through life.
For John Paul Castillo, “the world as we know it is the coexistence of tangible matter and humanity’s navigation of the unknown. Each of our journeys is influenced by our terrestrial backdrop that shapes us to what is desirable or breaks us down into pieces. Man is walled by a vast array of figures leading us to thrive or destroy—an identifiable dilemma.”
“In so many aspects, man is left without a choice as nature has defined it,” expressed Castillo, adding that “our name, your skin, and your body are predetermined, but what you do with them proposes infinite possibilities that unbolt a proportion of repercussion that sets our lives in motion. We are taunted with a number of doors our eyes and feet are set to seek and enter.”
“We are surrounded by shitholes and pitfalls that may vulnerably swallow us whole and helpless. The external pressures may tear us all apart. We have to move and not succumb to the power of this carnal dimension we are stuck in,” he stressed.
“Matter and Motion” explores what humanity has endured as creatures bound to face the harsh realities of life—the consequential impact of being thrown into a world where the death of matter liberates the body and soul and leaves one motionless.
